The Middle East’s newest airline, Riyadh Air, has taken another major step toward expanding its international network by seeking permission to operate non-stop flights to the United States.

The Saudi Arabian start-up carrier officially applied to the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) for a foreign air carrier permit and exemption authority on Tuesday, May 6. According to reports from AirlineGeeks, the airline’s legal representatives requested that the application be processed promptly under streamlined licensing procedures.

The move signals Riyadh Air’s growing ambition to become a major global airline. The carrier has already outlined plans to serve more than 100 destinations worldwide by the end of the decade. So far, the airline has announced routes to Jeddah, Madrid, Manchester, London, Dubai, and Cairo, with many more expected to follow in the coming years.

Launching services to the United States is considered a particularly important milestone for Riyadh Air. Transatlantic routes are often among the most profitable for international airlines, attracting both premium business travellers and a growing number of leisure passengers. Saudi Arabia’s expanding tourism sector, driven by the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 initiative, is also expected to increase demand for travel between the US and the Gulf region.

For Riyadh Air, entering the US market is about more than simply adding another long-haul destination. The airline is positioning itself as a global connector, using Riyadh as a major transit hub between Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Future US services could offer travellers an additional option when flying beyond Saudi Arabia to destinations across Asia and Africa once the airline further develops its network.

Although Riyadh Air has not yet confirmed which American cities it plans to serve, there are already signs of growing connectivity between Saudi Arabia and the United States. Delta Air Lines has announced plans to launch non-stop flights between Atlanta (ATL) and Riyadh, while Saudia currently operates flights from Saudi Arabia to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).

As Riyadh Air continues building its global presence, its application to the DOT marks another important step in establishing itself as a serious player in the international aviation market. With ambitious expansion plans and Saudi Arabia investing heavily in aviation and tourism infrastructure, the airline is expected to become one of the most closely watched new carriers in the industry over the next decade.
