A Jetblue Airbus A320-200 performing a flight from Fort Lauderdale to Nassau in the Bahamas recently had to perform an emergency landing due to a fire on board. The hour-long flight was uneventful until about 50 miles from Nassau, after the aircraft had already begun its descent. At this point, smoke began to fill the cabin and the pilots were forced to contact ATC in Nassau to declare an emergency.

Back in the cabin, flight attendants had identified the source of the smoke: A portable charger in a passenger's hand luggage had ignited. Fortunately, the cabin crew were able to extinguish the fire with water, and subsequently contained the smoldering device in the forward lavatory trash can. The JetBlue aircraft was able to land safely on Nassau's runway 14 without any injuries to those on board. The Bahamas Air Accident Investigation Authority is currently investigating the incident.
